"And Nathanael said to him: Can any thing of good come from Nazareth? Philip saith to him: Come and see." John 1:46 Sometimes we meet people who ask us a similar question, "Can anything good come from the Catholic Church?" This question is generally worded slightly different and is sometimes more of a statement than a question. People will tell you that religion has brought about more evil than good. Some people will mention the clergy abuse scandal from recently as though this is what defines the Church. Can anything good come from a church like that? Can these priests really reform their lives and become among the greatest Saints the Church has ever known (similar to St Augustine of Hippo whose feastday we will be celebrating in a few days)? Just like Philip invited Barthololmew, I invite you to, "Come and see." "Where two or three are gathered in my name..." Let us follow St. Monica's example and unite our prayers together as we pray for our priests. Soon enough I am sure God will reveal to us, just like he did for St. Barthololmew, that great good can come from where we are least expecting.
